Who Will Bell the Cat?

There lived a family of mice in a big house. They would run about all over the house and eat up everything they found in the kitchen, in the dining room, in the living room, and also in the bedroom! The people living in that house got so irritated with the mice that
they brought home a cat.

From that day onwards the mice could no longer run about freely like before. Every time they came out of their hole the cat would eat them up. Soon the mice held a meeting. “The cat has eaten up so many of our friends,” they squeaked. “We must do something
about it.”

“We cannot play about in the house like before,” complained a baby mouse. “We cannot eat as much food as we wish to,” complained a hungry mouse. Suddenly a little mouse declared, “Let us tie a bell around the cat. The bell will ring every time the cat comes to catch us. We can then quickly hide in our holes and save our lives.”

All the mice were excited to hear this and started jumping up and down with joy. Only an old mouse remained quiet and slowly said, “You have made a very good plan. But have you decided who will bell the cat?”

The mice fell silent as nobody dared to go near the cat. They had to thus let go of their plan and went back to their holes quietly.

Moral: It is always easier said than done.
