The Perceptive Fish

In a river, there once lived many fishes. Nobody ever came there to catch them. There were three tiny fishes who were very good friends.

One day, the three fishes swam near a town. There, they saw many people coming to the river for various purposes. “We have never seen so many people together,” said one fish in astonishment. “I like this place a lot. Let’s not go back,” said another fish.

But, the third fish was thinking about something else. “We won’t be safe here. We might get trapped in the fishermen’s net anytime. Let’s go back to our old home. Since that place is isolated, it is out of any danger,” he said.

The other two fishes were very disappointed with the idea of going back. They kept on insisting until the third fish also agreed to dwell there. But, he was always very careful.

One morning, the fish were playing in the water. Two of them had not noticed the fishermen’s net. They swam to it unknowingly. The third fish was alert. He rushed towards it to save his friends. He splashed water around the net.

“A large fish is caught in the net,” the fishermen said among themselves. They immediately pulled the net by one corner to check. This helped the two fishes to spot the net and they swam in the opposite direction. The third fish swam towards them and said, “I had warned you earlier, but you didn’t listen to me.”

“We had been fools,” said the two fishes. “Let’s all return to our old home.” Together they went back and lived happily forever.
