Long ago, a king had a beautiful garden in his palace. In that garden, there lived a group of monkeys. One day, the king announced a holiday on the occasion of his son’s wedding. Everybody in the kingdom was celebrating.
The gardener of the royal garden wished to spend the holiday with his family. But, he could not do so as he had to water the plants in the garden. After thinking for some time, he decided to talk to the monkeys. He went to the tree where the chief of the monkeys lived. Seeing him, the chief jumped down and asked, “My lord, how can I help you?”
“Everyone is enjoying the holiday. I too can join my family if you water the plants for me,” replied the gardener. “Certainly! I’ll take good care of the garden. You go and celebrate,” the chief assured him.
When the gardener had left, the chief of the monkeys gathered the group and said, “Friends, you’ll have to water the plants today as the gardener is away.
“But we don’t know how to do that!” said the monkeys. “That’s very simple,” said the chief.
“Pull out the plants to check the length of the roots. Give more water to those having longer roots and less to those with shorter roots.”
The monkeys followed their chief’s instructions. Soon, they finished pulling out all the plants and watering them. The next day, the gardener returned and found the plants dead. He began to repent for trusting a fool, but it was too late.
Moral: With every desire to do good, a fool only harms others.
