The Emperor’s New Clothes

A tailor once boasted that he made such wonderful clothes that these could be seen only by intelligent and sensitive people, while they remained invisible to the rest. Hearing of this, the emperor ordered the tailor to make such a becoming suit for him. The tailor demanded a good sum of money and thread, and began working, or rather, he pretended to be working as he had not placed anything on his loom. But, each courtier, who came to check the tailor’s work at the emperor’s orders, sang the tailor’s praises, praising the cloth, design, and his workmanship! Actually, they did not see anything but lied so that the others would not think that they were dull or insensitive! Finally, even the emperor pretended he liked the suit, though he also could not see it! He wore the invisible suit at an important parade. As he passed through his people, they all exclaimed: ‘What a wonderful suit!’ But, then, a small boy shouted: ‘Look, the emperor has no clothes on!’ And the crowd began to murmur: ‘Yes, the emperor is not wearing anything!’ Feeling thoroughly embarrassed, the emperor quickly ran back to his palace!
