The Crooked Jackal

In a forest, there once lived a camel and a jackal. Every day, they used to go to the river to drink water. There was a corn field on the other side of the river. The jackal always thought of crossing the river and visiting the field. But, he could not swim.

One day, he said to the camel, “Friend, I want to eat corn from that field. I can’t cross the river without your help. Will you carry me on your back?”

The camel found it to be a very good idea. “That’s easy. Tonight, we’ll go there and enjoy the corn together,” he said.

At night, the two friends met near the river bank. The jackal leaped on the camel’s back and together they crossed the river. Overjoyed, they began to eat rapidly. “I have eaten enough,” the jackal said. But the camel was still feeling hungry. He could not stop eating. The jackal now started growling. When the camel asked him not to growl so loudly, he said, “It’s my habit to growl after eating anything.”

Soon, the farmers came running. The jackal hid behind the bushes. The farmers saw the camel and they beat him up. When the farmers were gone, the jackal came out of the bushes and said, “How bad these people are! I feel so sorry for you.”

The camel said nothing. He carried the jackal on his back and went to the river. He went deep into the water and rolled himself. “Please don’t do this!” pleaded the jackal. “This is my habit after eating,” replied the camel.

The jackal realized his mistake, but it was too late. He fell into the river and drowned.
